Joseph Alstott was the tenth child of John and Margaret Altstatt. Joseph was born in Knox County, Tennessee. His grandfather, Nicholas Alstott, had moved from Berks County, Pennsylvania to Rockingham County, Virginia, in the 1780s, right after the Revolutionary War. John and Margaret moved with their family to Tennessee around 1794, and into the Northwest Territory around 1814, settling in Clark County, Indiana.

Joseph Alstott was a cooper by trade. He married Jane Campbell on February 26, 1831, in Clark County, Indiana.

John Wesley Allstott was the fifth child of Joseph and Jane. He was a trail master on the Oregon Trail in the 1850s. He came west looking for gold and bringing out homesteaders. He married Hannah E. "Lizzie" Love (photo of John W. and 'Lizzie" at left) in 1871 in Lawrence County, Missouri, and this union produced six offspring.

Most of the descendants of John and Lizzie Allstott live in the northwestern United States.
