The first six of the Altstatt children were born in Clark County, Indiana. In 1839, the Altstatt's moved with their Covet and Stutzman relatives down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers and settled in Franklin County, Arkansas. Two children were added to this family in Arkansas.

Thomas Altstatt died at the untimely age of about 41 years around 1849. His wife then married George Ivy and the Altstatt children were raised in the Ivy household.

The sons of Thomas and Mary - John Warner Altstatt, Thomas Franklin Altstatt and Daniel Stuthman Altstatt (photos left, top to bottom) served in the Confederate Army in the Civil War as infantrymen. They were all captured at the Battle of Vicksburg, Mississippi, on July 4, 1863 and paroled.

Family surname spellings used up to Civil War period were Alstott, Allstott, Allstatt or Altstatt. After that period all of the male lines descended from the three sons of Thomas Altstatt used the spelling "Altstatt."

Thomas Altstatt was the ninth child of John and Margaret Altstatt. Thomas was born in Knox County, Tennessee. His grandfather, Nicholas Alstott, had moved from Berks County, Pennsylvania to Rockingham County, Virginia, in the 1780s, right after the Revolutionary War. John and Margaret moved with their family to Tennessee around 1794, and into the Northwest Territory around 1814, settling in Clark County, Indiana.

Thomas Altstatt married Mary Covert, the sister of Nancy Covert, who was the wife of Willliam Alstott. Tom and Mary married in Clark County, Indiana, on October 15, 1826.
