Robert Altstatt was the oldest son of John and Margaret Altstatt. He was born in Rockingham Co., Virginia. His grandfather, Nicholas Alstott, had moved from Berks County, Pennsylvania to Rockingham County in the 1780s, right after the Revolutionary War. John and Margaret moved with their family to Tennessee around 1794, and into the Northwest Territory around 1814, settling in Clark County, Indiana.

Robert married Sarah Long on February 19, 1814 in Knox County, Tennessee. Robert and Sarah had nine children all born in Clark County, Indiana. All the Altstatt children used the spelling Alstott, except for Isaac Newton Altstatt (pictured at left in his St.Louis, MO fireman's uniform). Isaac was a cooper by trade and served in the Civil War in the Missouri Calvary from 1862-65. Isaac was a fire engine driver for the city of St. Louis, Missouri, for 44 years until his death in 1909.
